Is Cooler canon?

Cooler is regularly mentioned as the most popular villain to appear in any of the Dragon Ball Z Movies, perhaps only rivalled by Broly. Cooler has found fame again recently by being included as DLC for the surprisingly popular Dragon Ball FighterZ video game. So with new legions of fans discovering Cooler for the first time, a common question that keeps popping up on the internet is, is Cooler Canon?

No, Cooler is not Canon. Cooler only appears in 2 Dragon Ball Z movies, which are considered filler and not part of the main canon story line.

Who Is Cooler?

Cooler is the older brother of the Tyrant Frieza and son to Galatic Warlord King Cold. Even though he’s Frieza’s brother, he doesn’t seem particularly fond of him and even said he’d have tried to kill him if Goku hadn’t done it. But still, Cooler came to Earth to try to push around the earthlings but was sent packing by the Z warriors. After floating in space for a while, he came back again stronger than ever, but our boys Goku and Vegeta still managed to finish him off for good this time.

What Media does Cooler appear in?

Meta Cooler is the star of his very own two movies. That’s more than Frieza ever got!. They are Dragon Ball Z: Cooler’s Revenge (1991) and Dragon Ball Z: The Return of Cooler (1992). He also appeared in countless video games, including Battle of Z and FighterZ.

Why isn’t Cooler Canon when he appears in Dragon Ball Z movies?

The Dragon Ball Z movies that came out were purely used as a delaying tactic for Toriyama to write more Dragon Ball Manga. So the animation team would either make a filler arc or a movie to keep the audience interested while the true story was written by and published in Manga form. That doesn’t mean these movies aren’t awesome and official, they just aren’t as official as the Manga but are still really high quality, and we recommend you watch all of them!

Will Cooler ever be Canon?

This is a question no one knows the answer to. Probably not even Toriyama himself! But for years, Broly wasn’t Canon, and fans everywhere were delighted that he got his own movie, Dragon Ball Super: Broly (2018). So who knows, Dragon Ball Super: Cooler could happen one day… but we wouldn’t hold our breath. Right now, there is plenty of Manga to turn into anime, so it’s almost certainly not going to happen in the next 2 to 3 years. After that, it’s anyone’s guess, but if you keep talking about Cooler on Twitter, then they’ll have to listen to the fans eventually, right?
