Mystic Gohan Explained – (Ultimate Gohan)

There have been a few magical moments in Dragon Ball where Gohan was the most powerful fighter in the world. First against Cell when he became a Super Saiyan 2, and the 2nd time was during the Buu saga where he’d once again leapfrog everyone else to become the most powerful fighter with his new mystic form creating Ultimate Gohan.

This form has bypassed Super Saiyan entirely and doesn’t change Gohan’s appearance that much, so there’s been a lot of talk and speculation about it over the years. We here at Dragon Ball Guru aim to answer all of your questions about Mystic/ Ultimate Gohan?

Mystic Gohan Vs Ultimate Gohan – What’s the difference?

Mystic Gohan and Ultimate Gohan are two different names for the same thing. The official name is Ultimate Gohan, and Mystic Gohan is just an unofficial fan name for this form.

However, the unofficial name has become so prevalent that many people think the official name is Mystic Gohan.

We think both are acceptable, and you can use whichever one you feel sounds cooler, but if you want to be a 100% accurate fanboy, then Ultimate Gohan is the official name.

What is Mystic Gohan?

Mystic Gohan, officially known as Ultimate Gohan, is the name given to Gohan after he has his potential unlocked by Elder Kai. The Elder Kai performed a ritual on Gohan which allowed Gohan to tap into his hidden potential, giving him a massive power boost, much stronger than his current strongest form Super Saiyan 2.

Mystic Gohan was first seen Chapter 496 of the original Dragon Ball Manga, or Episode 263 of Dragon Ball Z, named ‘A Whole New Gohan‘

The form allows Gohan to tap into the power of Super Saiyan but without the energy usage and baggage associated with it, allowing him to make better use of his Ki, which both increases his stamina and power level.

In terms of appearance, Gohan’s body doesn’t change that much. The colour of his hair stays the same but spikes up more due to the energy aura surrounding him. Instead of a yellow Super Saiyan glow, Gohan has a clear white glow but with the same sort of intensity as Super Saiyan.

How Strong is Mystic Gohan?

Mystic Gohan is a form that allows Gohan to reach 100% of his potential, which means it can grow stronger and stronger as Gohan grows.

When he first learns the Mystic form, he is about the level of Super Saiyan 2 / 3, but in Dragon Ball Super, Mystic Gohan becomes the strength of Super Saiyan Blue.

Why doesn’t Gohan go Super Saiyan anymore?

The reason Gohan doesn’t go Super Saiyan anymore is that he doesn’t need to. Super Saiyan is a weaker form than his Ultimate form and takes up more energy to use.

However, during the Movie Ressurection F, Gohan is so rusty with the Ultimate Form that he can’t actually use it anymore, so he is forced to use Super Saiyan 2 to fight Frieza.

But after a short amount of really hard training with Piccolo in Dragon Ball, Super Gohan is able to get back to his Mystic state and become the level of a Super Saiyan Blue.

Who’d win, Mystic Gohan vs SSJ3 Goku?

Although this fight never happened in Dragon Ball Z, it’s a very interesting theoretical matchup. Super Saiyan 3 (SSJ3) was the strongest Saiyan form which only Goku had access to, but Mystic Gohan was possibly even stronger.

In terms of who would win, we have to say Mystic Gohan would be a major favourite. Goku was about the level of Majin Buu with his Super Saiyan 3, which Mystic Gohan was stronger than Super Buu, who we know is stronger than classic Majin Buu.

So Mystic Gohan is quite a bit stronger than SSJ3 Goku, but who knows what would actually happen in a fight. Mystic Gohan was tricked by Super Buu into being absorbed, so maybe he wasn’t the smartest fighter.

Who’d win, Mystic Gohan vs Golden Frieza

In another tasty theoretical matchup, it’s interesting to speculate who’d win between Mystic Gohan and Golden Frieza. We know that Mystic Gohan is quite a bit weaker than Super Saiyan Blue, as Goku was quite easily able to defeat Gohan during their training for the tournament of Power.

However, Frieza gave Goku a pretty good fight during Ressurection F and is even stronger now than he was then. So Frieza’s power level is probably a lot closer to a Super Saiyan Blue Goku than Gohan’s power level. So if we were placing a bet, we think the smart money would be on Frieza.

But Gohan is the boy with unlimited potential, and if Frieza got Gohan mad, their power levels are close enough that Gohan could pull a victory out of the bag.

Mystic Gohan – Our Thoughts

There’s no denying it. Mystic Gohan is one of the biggest OP transformations in Dragon Ball. Sure, his Super Saiyan 2 transformation was OP as well, but at least that was a continuation of his hard work in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber with Goku.

This transformation was out of nowhere and took Gohan to a Super Saiyan 1 to stronger than Super Saiyan 3 instantly.

That being said, we really like Gohan having his own separate transformation from Goku and Vegeta, and the character design for Mystic Gohan is really cool. But Toriyama sort of wrote himself into a corner as there’s nowhere realistic for Gohan to go from here.

Is his next form going to be called his Super Ultimate form? Is Gohan’s ultimate form just going to keep getting stronger and stronger? Is Gohan ever going to use God Ki with this form? Who knows…
