Why does Broly Hate Goku?

Although many fans wouldn’t have thought it possible, it seems there is someone who hates Goku more than Frieza and Vegeta combined. And that is fellow Saiyan Broly! But what on earth could the loveable rogue Goku have possibly done to make Broly hate Goku this much?

When Broly and Goku were infants, little Goku kept baby Broly awake by crying at night. As a result, Broly used to cry too, which caused him to hate Goku.

Who is Broly?

In case you don’t know much about Broly, he is the legendary Super Saiyan.

He is among the most naturally powerful Saiyans in the universe. His latent ability exceeds that of Prince Vegeta, the son of King Vegeta.

No wonder he banishes Broly and sends him to another planet.

Paragus, Broly’s father, steals a pod and follows his son to this outlying planet to raise him with revenge on his mind. This is why Broly is a bit of a lunatic.

Does Broly Really Hate Goku Because He Made Him Cry?

That is the surface-level answer you will get from most fans, but there’s more to the story. Sure, Goku traumatized Broly. However, that’s not the sole reason why Broly hates Goku.

Saiyans believe that strength is innate. You’re either born with it, or you’re not. Infants like Vegeta with high battle powers were kept on the planet to be trained as elite warriors.

Infants with low battle powers like Goku were sent to the alien worlds to prove themselves worthy of being warriors or die trying.

Goku was taught the value of hard work and discipline, and he has been able to outdo the elite time and again.

Broly was a pure embodiment of the Saiyan belief in inborn talent.

He was born with the battle power of 10k! No wonder King Vegeta believed that Broly could be a threat. Goku, as an infant, didn’t recognize Broly’s superiority.

A newborn, with a battle power of 2, Goku was wailing at the top of his lungs.

He kind of refused to be submissive.

Goku had guts from the very start. Broly resented his unspoken challenge.

This made him instinctively fear Goku. Hence, he is fixated on defeating him, wanting to prove that he is the strongest under the heavens.

Other Fan Theories

Some fans believe that Broly was a slave of his primal Saiyan instincts, and that’s the first reason he despises Goku.

His instincts must have told him that Goku could be a threat in the future, and he needs to crush him.

The movie 8 expands on the fact that Goku would be a threat even though he lacked power by symbolizing that notion in the scene where Goku makes Broly cry.

The movie goes out of its way to repeat that scene.

Another fan theory is that Goku was crying because he had a glimpse into the future where he saw Vegeta destroying a planet.

Broly, on the other hand, was crying because he saw into the future as well. But in his vision, he was being destroyed by Goku.

That’s why he is so eager to destroy Goku and has a deep hatred for our hero.

Even though Broly hated Goku for many decades and many movies we hope they turned a corner in their relationship with the latest movie, Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Goku saved Broly’s life and set him up with a new place to live, so hopefully they can let bygones be bygones.
